Fairford Graves

A beautifully illustrated report of William Wylies’s findings with a poem written by the author called ‘The Saxon Chieftain’. Some of the finds are in the Ashmolean Museum.

‘The opportunity of investigating a large portion of an Anglo Saxon necropolis, which many an able archaeologist would have coveted, chance placed before me. Had I not been on the spot, these Fairford graves would, not improbably, have passed away, like so many others unnoticed and unknown; but it is to be regretted that the work of discovery and narration did not fall to the lot of one better qualified for the task. I can but plead attention to detail, an accuracy in describing “quaeque ipse vidi.’
